Fees and Processes for Americans to Get Visas to Teach in China
The instructions on the Chinese Embassy website are very clear about the procedure for your application to get a visa to teach in China.

China Visa Application Process
- go to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate Visa Office to Apply in Person.

- you must lodge your application at the consulate that has jurisdiction for the state where you reside.
- Mail applications are not acceptable and will be refused.
- mail back service IS available - discussed below.
- no appointment is required.
- regular processing time is 4 days
- same day rush service is available for $30USD. Application must be received before 11am at some consulates and 12:30pm at others and may be picked up between 2:30pm and 3:00pm (best to be early, less lines early).
- next day rush service is available for $30USD.
- express service is available where the visa will be done in 2 or 3 working days, this costs $20USD.
- it is best to visit the Chinese Embassy or Consulate FIRST thing in the morning to avoid long lines.
- Documents to be Included With Your Application
- Z Visa Applicants Need the Following:
- One completely filled out Visa Application Form for the P.R. China (Q-2007)
- One recently taken 2X2 in. photo showing entire face and without a hat on. Please affix the photo to the application form.
- Original passport with at least 2 blank visa pages and valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of application.
- Make sure you sign your passport
- An "invitation letter" or telegram from the relevant department of the Chinese Government or Government-authorized company.
- Original "Foreign Experts Working Permit" issued by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affaris, or orginal and copy of "Alien Employment Lisense" issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, or other relevant permit of employment.
- Spouse or children of the Z-Visa applicant who are following the applicant to stay in China are required to be listed in the above-mentioned invitation letter or telegram. Otherwise original and copy of Marriage Certificate or Birth Certificate to prove their relationship are also required.
- A child of Chinese descent and born in a foreign country who applies for a Chinese visa for the first time is required to submit his or her Birth Certificate and foreign passport or foreign permanent resident permit (e.g. Green Card) of one of his or her parents.
- Non-US passport bearers shall provide documents valid for at least 6 months that entitle them to reside or work for an extended period of time in the US.
- NOTE: If the visa application form is not filled out completely, correctly, and legibly, this can cause a delay in processing or the refusal of the requested visa.
Mail Back Service
So let's suppose you can get into the consulate but you don't want to hang around for a day or so to pick it up or let's imagine you get your sister's friends brothers auntie to drop it off for you and you don't want to impose and ask her to pick it up.
Instructions for Mail Back Service
- provide a self-addressed pre-paid return envelope from FedEx or Express Mail.
- you must fill in your name and address as the SENDER on the return envelop instead of the Chinese Embassy or Consulate.
- the processing time is 5-7 business days. No rush service is available.
- in addition to the application fee, a $5 handling fee per envelope shall be charged.
- pay by Money Order, Cashier's Check, or Company Check.
- make the check or money order payable to Chinese Embassy or Chinese Consulate.
