Public Schools in Korea

E-mail

Public schools in Korea began hiring native English speaking teachers in larger numbers in the late 90's. In 2003 the Ministry of Education sent out a directive to start an initiative to increase the level of English education in the public high schools. In turn, the high schools began looking for native English speakers to help them achieve the goal of increasing the level of proficiency in English among their students.

Today, Footprints is the single largest supplier of teachers to the public school programs in Korea- both EPIK and SMOE hire hundreds of teachers from Footprints each semester.

There are other recruiters who work with the government but often this is only because they have to. The government works with many different recruiters (usually 10 or more). Be careful though, an application through multiple recruiters for one job will cause your application to be rejected. They do not want to determine which recruiter the teacher belongs to and therefore could choose to dismiss the teacher's application. If you are considering other recruiters at the same time, weigh out the benefits, the in-country support, the teacher mentorship support, the alumni placements, the year round support, the in-country events and all the other amazing benefits that Footprints offers that other recruiters try futilely to replicate.

Public schools are often looking for candidates who are healthy, prepared and qualified. Public schools will consider most applicants who would qualify for an E2 visa.

What will qualify you for a higher salary?:

  • Bachelor's in Education, English or Linguistics
  • Bachelor's + TEFL/TESL certification
  • Bachelor's + 1 full year teaching experience
  • Masters Degree (in any discipline

That being said, these public school teaching opportunities around Korea are only supposed to be available twice per year, in March and in August but we are hiring year round in an effort to meet the need. We need thousands of public school teachers every year. You interested? Know anyone who might be? It's only a year... perhaps one of the best years of your life.

Teacher Reviews

Mathew Smallwood

Mathew Smallwood “A calm breeze lightly tosses my hair about, as I stroll the waterfront not far from my apartment. The waves crashing the shore have an intoxicating scent that propels all sorts of pleasant daydreaming. Am I in paradise? No I am most certainly not. But I am in a country I was dying to visit, and got more than I anticipated. Footprints Recruiting set me up with an ideal job that fits my teaching desires and has thus provided a backdrop to an amazing experience. I left for Korea in October of 2003, and I am currently teaching in Haeundae Beach Busan. Footprints takes care of you in a way that dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s are just the tip of the iceberg. I recommend this to the adventure seeking minds.”
