Types of Teaching Jobs in Chile

There are many different types of places one can work in Chile.  The references made on this page regarding qualifications are based on industry standards not government regulations.

Corporate Training Programs

Many Chilean companies are embracing the free trade agreements ratified with Canada and the United States and are focusing on exports and imports with foreign markets.  These companies often have staff education opportunities where employees are taught English.  Often these opportunities are outsourced employees are sent to Private Language Schools but in some cases in-house training is an option.

Recommended qualifications for application are:

  1. Bachelor's in Education or Business
  2. 1+ years experience teaching
  3. 1+ years experience in business
  4. TEFL/TESL/TESOL certification may also be a requirement

Private Language Schools

Private Language Schools are popping up all over the country.  Be advised that as quickly as many of them are opening, many of them are also disappearing.

These schools or institutes have a diverse student body ranging from pre-school to adults.

Recommended qualifications for application are:

  1. Bachelor's (in any discipline)
  2. TEFL/TESL/TESOL certification is not required but is definitely an asset

Public School System

Schools in the public school system are the ones in the greatest need but also the ones that have the most difficulty in hiring a native English teacher.  Class sizes are large, ranging from 35-50+ students in a class and there are few resources.  Classroom management is a battle and often students do not have pens, pencils, paper, textbooks or other materials.

This is a great opportunity for teachers to really make an impact but it is also one of the most challenging places to teach.

Recommended qualifications for application are:

  1. Bachelor's in Education
  2. 1+ years experience teaching
  3. TEFL/TESL/TESOL certification may also be a requirement

Semi-Private School System

In the semi-private school system the government subsidizes 50% of the cost for the student's education and the parents are responsible for the remaining 50% of the costs.

These schools often have smaller classroom sizes and generally are better equipped than the public schools.

Recommended qualifications for application are:

  1. Bachelor's in Education
  2. 1+ years experience teaching
  3. TEFL/TESL/TESOL certification may also be a requirement

Private Schools in Chile

These are schools where the parents are completely responsible for the cost of the education.  Education at this level is considered the best in the country and in many cases these children are education bi-lingually.

Recommended qualifications for application are:

  1. Bachelor's or Masters in Education
  2. 2+ years experience teaching
  3. TEFL/TESL/TESOL certification may also be a requirement
