Now that you’re in the classroom it’s time to communicate effectively with your EFL learners.
The following are some tips that teachers should keep in mind throughout the school year in order to ensure the needs of the students are being met.
- This may sound simple, but remember to speak in a clear, concise manner – and be sure to go at a slower pace than normal. Your students will not be able to understand you if you speak too fast or run your words together like you might do with other native English speakers!
- Make sure you provide your students with both visual and kinesthetic support. Some ways that you can do this is to use the various resources in the classroom such as the chalkboard, photographs, drawings and anything else that can provide clues as to meaning. Miming, gestures or acting also help emphasise what you are trying to convey to your new English learners.
- Make sure your students know how to respond when they are unable to comprehend the lesson. Teach them phrases such as: “please repeat”, “I don’t understand”, or “slowly please”. Encouraging your learners to have a bilingual dictionary on hand is also a sure way to encourage learning.
- Remember that raising your voice is not the way to ensure comprehension. Instead speak calmly and encouragingly. Let your students know that you are there to help them learn and have the patience to go about doing it.
- Going back to patience – remember to give your learners extra time while listening, speaking and writing. This allows them to properly formulate an answer, and to also feel more confident in sharing it.

“I've just been through the SMOE orientation and started my new job. And I just wanted to say thank you to you and Footprints- after meeting all those who came through other recruiting agencies I realized how lucky I was to be with Footprints. You provided me with much more information than others received and you've always been very helpful and knowledgeable.
Thank you so much again, Susannah”
