Start Class Off Right

E-mail

How many times do teachers arrive at class AFTER the students? Why, prepping last minute? Scrambling to get to the photocopier that has gone non-stop in the 10 minute break between classes. Even if this isn't you, if you are prepared but you're chatting and having a coffee or a good gossip til 30 seconds before class it to begin you might consider reading further.

After you scramble from the teacher's room and race to your classroom you arrive to a room full of hooligans. You try to look calm and control your breathing from the mad dash from the teachers room and the fight you had with the other teacher who was monopolizing the copier.

The students are already in a different psychological space and it is going to take 10 minutes to get them back. What can you do differently?

Step back, remove yourself from the situation. Imagine this.

You are already in the class when the students arrive. You greet each student at the door and say hello. A warm welcome goes a long way toward starting out the day and the year right. This provides a relax, secure environment for the students. You can control and channel energy right from the start before the environment in the class crossed the precarious boundary of control.
