It’s that time again….back to school time that is! No time of year is more alluring with the promise of new beginnings for teachers and students then September. Even if no one knows what the school year will bring, it’s hard to deny the anticipation and eagerness in the air for those wanting to find out. Below I have come up with my personal recipe for what back to school was like for me as a teacher.
4 Ways to Make your Life Easier on the First Day:
- Come prepared to be the center of attention and the recipient of numerous admirers/gawkers. The students are going to want to know all about you so be prepared to introduce yourself in a way that is fun. Perhaps a giant banner of your name that you’ve created or pictures of your life back home that you can pass around.
- Be firm but friendly. This is it folks, if you show your weakness on the first day the students will pick up on it right away and will make your life difficult for the remainder of the school year. Make sure that you have your own personal set of rules ready beforehand and be prepared to go over them with them.
- Come to class with a sense of humor – in my experience you never know what to expect in a classroom but if you come in with some flexibility and the ability to laugh then you’ll be alright.
- Just breath – you’re going to do a great job!

“Well all I can say is it is like nothing you could ever imagine. I am half way through my year and I could never have imagined all that I would learn and experience. Teaching is great, the kids are sweet (most of the time). Korea has lots to see and do. If you like shopping, climbing or eating this is the place for you! Having gotten on the plane and spent half a year here so far I feel like I can do anything. So what are you waiting for? Get on the plane already!”
