Getting a Visa to Teach in Taiwan
First, most teachers will enter Taiwan on a tourist visa and will change the status of their visa while in country. Very few schools go to the trouble of getting your visa prior to your departure. That being said, it is critical that as soon as you arrive your school start the process so that the government officials see that the process has been initiated. This brings up a couple issues:
- you will need to have some sort of medical coverage in place for when you arrive because you will not be covered until your are legally registered and employed.
- you will technically be working illegally until the forms are at least filed. Be sure to have all your documentation with you so this process can be initiated immediately if you are arriving on a tourist visa.
- many countries are able to automatically get a 30 day visitor visa which is issued to you on landing. Often this is NOT enough time to get your visa processed so it is very important that you apply for a 60 day visitor visa if you are entering on a tourist visa. Check the TECRO or TECO office to see if your country is one of those that is allowed a 30 day visitor visa: www.teco.org
Applying for a 60 Day Visitor Visa or a Teaching Visa
Teaching Visas for Taiwan are handled by the TECO or TECRO offices around the world. If you are applying for a visa, and you are living in Canada or the USA, certain offices have jurisdiction over issuing visas for specific states or provinces. Please review the information for your country and send or take your application to the appropriate office. If you are travelling and are in a different state or country you can apply at the office nearest to you but you will have to provide a local address or demonstrate that you are in a state of transit. Even then, they may still require you to apply in the state or province you are from. Be nice and hopefully they will process your visa for you. You always get more with honey than vinegar. |
