Korean Ultimate Team Represents in Shanghai

E-mail

On the weekend of June 21/22 The Korea Ultimate Players Association sent an ultimate frisbee team to compete an international tournament in Shanghai
The Korean team is unique at most tournaments in that nearly all our players have pretty much the same job… teaching English!

Saturday morning comes too early and we awake to unfathomable humidity and air thicker than the previous night’s hot and sour soup. We huddle up, pass out our sweet new uniforms from Footprints, and prepare to battle for Asian ultimate glory.

Despite going out earlier than we would have liked, Korea walked away from the weekend with positive attitudes and some great memories. After the tournament some players stick around to enjoy the city or travel China for a few weeks. While others hop on late night flights to make it back to Seoul to teach classes early Monday morning.

For those unaware of the ultimate scene in Asia, there is an extensive scene for tournaments with most major Asian cities hosting an event at least once during the year. This creates an informal ‘circuit’ that traveling teams from each city partake. Korea has a thriving ultimate scene that usually sends two full teams of 15 players to 3 or 4 tournaments a year. Past locations for tournaments are Hong Kong, Singapore, Fuji City, Manila, Singapore, and Jeju Island. International tournaments are a mix of competitive ultimate, and full bore partying in some of the most amazing cities in the world.

Teacher Reviews

Mathew Smallwood

Mathew Smallwood “A calm breeze lightly tosses my hair about, as I stroll the waterfront not far from my apartment. The waves crashing the shore have an intoxicating scent that propels all sorts of pleasant daydreaming. Am I in paradise? No I am most certainly not. But I am in a country I was dying to visit, and got more than I anticipated. Footprints Recruiting set me up with an ideal job that fits my teaching desires and has thus provided a backdrop to an amazing experience. I left for Korea in October of 2003, and I am currently teaching in Haeundae Beach Busan. Footprints takes care of you in a way that dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s are just the tip of the iceberg. I recommend this to the adventure seeking minds.”
