Things to Pack for Chile

Pack smart.  You don't need to transpose your current house or apartment to Chile, that's simply not an option.  You need to pack smart to save costs and maximize your comfort in Chile.

  • How to Survive in the Chilean Jungle by John Brennan and Alvaro Taboada is a must!
  • clothes for 4 seasons (you can buy all sizes down there but your disposable income won’t allow you to go nuts)
  • insect repellent containing DEET
  • bed nets impregnated with permethrin (can be purchased in camping or military supply stores).
    • Overseas, permethrin or another insecticide, deltamethrin, may be purchased to treat bed nets and clothes.
  • pver-the-counter anti-diarrheal medicine to take if you have diarrhea.
  • Advil or Tylenol
  • prescription medications: make sure you have enough to last during your trip, as well as a copy of the prescription(s).
  • your favorite cooking spices – don’t buy bulk items, make sure the canisters are sealed
  • your favorite comfort foods when you’re sick or lonely (chicken noodle packets are great)
  • Neo Citran comes in handy when you’re under the weather
  • European outlet converter is costly here
  • teaching clothes
    • PUBLIC SCHOOLS
      • ladies, you will wear a glamorous apron, affectionately known as a delantan.
      • fellas, you have the Nutty Professor lab coat.  However, the good news is that you can wear whatever you want underneath.  Don´t worry about packing teaching clothes.
    • PRIVATE SCHOOLS
      • ladies, dresses, slacks, blouses, nothing too high cut and nothing too low cut.  Shoulders covered is best.
      • fellas, slacks, collar shirts (long or short), ties are preferred, no open shoes.
  • Teaching Materials - whatever you can save room to bring in your suitcase for resources the schools would love to have-Golden Books from a yard sale, old magazines to make vocab flashcards, posters with the days of the week and such from an education store, CD´s of children´s songs, anything!
