General Requirements To Teach English Abroad

E-mail

First things first, the requirements to teach abroad vary from country to country but for the most part, most countries are moving toward requiring all people to have a university degree in any discipline.

Important to note, Footprints does not impose this requirement, this is a required condition to meet eligibility requirements for visas in the country you are wishing to teach.

Visas to teach English are often in their own category in countries where ESL is in high demand. In Korea for example, teaching visas are called E2 Visas where in China they are called Z-Visas with Foreign Expert Certificates. In order to qualify for visas of this nature, one of the requisites is a 3 or 4 year bachelor's degree as a minimum.

There are some countries where this is not a requirement, we do not work in any of these countries at the present time. Please check job portals like:

Here is a list of the current requirements to teach abroad with Footprints:

  1. you must be a native English speaker
    • if you are not a native English speaker but are fluent in the language this may still not allow you to get a teaching visa
  2. you must have a passport from one of these countries:
    • Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK or the USA
  3. a bachelor's degree in any discipline
  4. a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining
  5. you must not have a criminal record
Prior to teaching, travel or TEFL/TESL certification is not required, but is looked upon favourably. In some cases specific jobs may require certification or experience, the job ad listed on our site should specifically reference this requirement.

The most critical skills to have are an open mind, a sense of humor, and flexibility.

Teacher Reviews

Holly Hutchens

Holly Hutchens “I'd like to start off by saying that my choice to teach abroad in Korea was one I know I will never regret! Footprints made it very easy to communicate with the school regarding details of where I'd be living and what I'd be teaching as well as taking care of my flight information. At the airport the morning we left, my boyfriend and I encountered overweight bags and extremely long lines at security, and we missed our flight by literally one minute. As we watched our plane pull from the gate, we just about lost our minds and any hope that we'd make the long journey we'd been planning for so long. We made one simple phone call to the travel agent, Claus, that Footprints set us up with. It was 6AM where he was on a Monday morning when we called in a panic. He said, "Stay by your phone," and we knew that he would fix this fiasco for us. Luckily, while Claus was searching for a solution, a woman from United Airlines was able to book us on another flight so that we would make our connection out of the U.S. to Seoul. We would like to thank Claus and Laina at Footprints for all their help in getting us to Korea! ”
