Some teachers in the past have found it very helpful to open a joint bank account in their home contry or adding power of attorney to an existing bank account with someone worthy of trust (e.g. mother or father) in order to ensure your credit card bills etc., can be paid without being present. In most cases this can be accomplished online but if you need to transfer funds or have issues, it's nice to have an authorized advocate at home to help. When opening an account in Thailand, you will be required to make a 100 Baht deposit and an ATM card will cost 150 Baht and you need to have a legal working visa. ATM cards from bank accounts in your home country can be used as long as it has the Cirrus logo on it (service fees vary). Thai banks charge for cashing foreign cheques or bank drafts. There is also long delay before the money is available. It is not advisable to bring cheques or bank drafts. Currency may be exchanged for Thai Baht, but the currency must be in good condition with no tears or it will not be accepted by the banks. The standard practise for paying teachers in Thailand is for the school to set up a direct deposit system where the money gets deposited directly into your bank account. |
