If you are sending money home through a wire transfer it is wise to look around as banks may vary in their handling fee. I used to send my money home once a month for 1500 yen. Although there were times when I first arrived where it cost me 4000yen to do a money transfer until I got wise to the system. Also, the speed in which you need your money to arrive home will make a difference in how much it costs you.
I also remember being able to send money home through a money order at the post office for a very reasonable rate. It took a little longer than the bank however the exchange rates were the same and it was very reliable as long as you had someone at home who could deposit your money order into your bank account for you.
