Surf's up at Waiao

Waiao is a great place to surf in Taiwan. Long rides are not known in Taiwan but Waiao offers easy rides and a relatively safe place to get your surfing fix. Known in Taiwan as one of the best places to surf, it is a very popular place. For some, maybe too popular.

This surfer's paradise is bordered by the Wushikang breakwater and runs northward to the Waiao Creek, covering about 30 hectares. Its flat sand with beautiful views and great waves. The actual surfing zone is much smaller though and as a result of its' popularity, this small area can be too busy with people trying to catch a wave or swim out past the break.

Surfing is great year round here but if you're looking for something a little more tranquil, come after the summer.

One unfortunate circumstance here is that the surfing/beach culture here is NOT environmentally friendly. Bring and extra bag or two for rubbish and do a bit to pick up around you. Hopefully the Taiwanese people that see you doing this will change their behaviour in embarrassment.

Around the corner is Dasi Honeymoon Bay - also known for surfing and it's resort style environment. This is one of the places where national surfing competitions are held each year with 2-4 meter waves. Surf's up!
