Life of a Teacher in Georgia

As a teacher in Georgia one always feels safe and there is a serenity here that is hard to describe.  Although there are conflict areas where Russia and Georgia are struggling for control, there are no teaching jobs there and no one is placed near those regions.  Everywhere I went was very safe; there are no guns and very little crime.

On vacations or weekends there are loads of opportunities to explore the regions and to take in the immense beauty of the rugged landscape. Travel within Georgia is super cheap.  Georgia also borders Turkey and Bulgaria is across the Black Sea.  It's also a short 3 hour flight to get to Western European countries. georgian-national-ballet

On the weekends, depending on where you are placed, most people hit the movies or a pub or some form of performance.  Performing arts is really popular here with live music, theater, mime theater, ballet, and opera topping the list of most popular.  Hiking, skiing, swimming, camping, and horseback riding are also very common.

Many friends and family have asked me about the 2008 Russian invasion wondering if there is a further threat and although I am not a diplomat or trained in the ways of understanding foreign policy, no one here feels threatened by another conflict.

My work week is great.  I teach Monday to Friday for about 30 hours and my schedule is approximately 9am to 1:30pm daily which leaves me loads of time to pursue other interests and I spend a lot of time planning my classes and pursuing my hobby, chess, which is a very popular pastime here.

The summers here are HOT and few homes or schools are equipped with air conditioning so that took some getting used to.  One of the female teachers I worked with told me that a hand held fan is a must for women on the bus because most public transport has no AC.
