Rent and House Furnishings Explained

In most cases the school will assist you in finding housing when teaching in Brunei and then you would get an allowance or rental credit.  The most common situation follows this process:housing-in-brunei

  1. Arrive and go to a hotel or serviced apartment.
  2. School assists you in providing housing options or a real estate agent will support you.
  3. Before you choose a house be certain to have a school representative check over the house for you.
  4. The landlord will have to sign a tenancy agreement with the school.
  5. If there is a balance credit from the housing allowance it will be allocated to your account.
  6. If there is a balance debit from the housing allowance it will be deducted from your pay.

Housing Allowances:

The teachers will have their actual rent deducted from the allowance with the remainder (if any) being paid into their salaries.  Most commonly the housing allowances follow this scale: (BSB = Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital)

   In BSB
 Outside BSB
 Single Status Teachers
B$1400 per month  B$1500 per month
 Married/Single with Dependents
 B$1500 per month
 B$1600 per month
Teaching Couple (or with de facto partners who are also teachers at the school)
 B$1700 per month
 B$1800 per month

Most houses here are furnished although some teachers prefer theirs completely unfurnished so that they can bring their own things from their homes. However, it does differ from house to house. Most landlords will provide curtains/blinds for all windows, a lounge set for the living, a dining table and beds and cupboards while kitchens will be fitted with a cooker oven and fridge.

Occasionally you will get generous landlords who provide a TV, ASTRO hardware or satellite dish and/or washing machine – but they are more of an exception than the rule. If provided, it will be the responsibility of the teacher to use these appropriately and be responsible for repairs and replacement for damage/wear and tear incurred through normal use. Household goods and furniture are easily obtained and there are some places that sell inexpensive items.

The school most often will provide a set of bed linen and a pillow each for teachers and their accompanying dependents. Teachers can bring their own linen if they wish but they can be bought cheaply in Brunei.  Beds are the standard king and queen sizes.

The school will also loan basic kitchen ware (plates/cutlery/mugs/electric kettle/cooking pan) to teachers during the orientation period. These are to be returned to the school at the end of the orientation period.
