The following is a list of holidays celebrated at most schools in Thailand. Dates are included when specific dates are relevant.
- Jakkri’s Day
- A Thai national holiday celebrating the coronation of the first Jakkri king of Thailand.
- Songkran, Thai New Year
- Songkran is a national holiday. During this festival, Thais go around with powder on their faces and shoot water at others for good luck. It is also a time to pay respect to elders and the family.
- Visahka Bucha Day (full moon of May)
- This is a Buddhist religious holiday celebrating the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Lord Buddha.
- Wai Kru Day, Pay Respect to Teachers Day
- This holiday is celebrated in most schools by a ceremony where students from each class presented gifts of flowers to the teachers.
- Soonthom Phu Day
- Asarnha Bucha Day and Buddhist Lent (full moon of July)
- This is a Buddhist national holiday celebrating when Lord Buddha began teaching Buddhism and the beginning of the Buddhist monastic order.
- Queen’s Birthday/Mother’s Day (August 12)
- Queen Sirikit is also highly regarded in Thailand. Her birthday corresponds with Mother’s Day.
- King Rama V Death Day (October 23)
- A Thai national holiday commemorating the death of King Rama V (1868-1910), a highly respected king of Thailand.
- Loy Krathong (first full moon of November)
- One of the most popular festivals in early November is Loy Krathong. It takes place during the first full moon of November.
- King’s Birthday/Father’s Day (December 5)
- The King is highly respected in Thailand. Thais celebrate the King’s Birthday and Father’s Day on the same day.
- Constitution Day
- In 1932, King Rama VII agreed to institute a constitution. Thailand thus became a constitutional monarchy.
- New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day (December 31/January 1st)
- Thailand celebrates the international New Year.
- Children’s Day (a Saturday in January)
- Schools with Saturday classes will usually close this day.
- Teacher’s Day
- Teacher’s Day is usually celebrated with a party.
- Chinese New Year (Date varies)
- The lunar new year is also celebrated in Thailand.
- Maka Bucha Day (full moon in February)
- This is a Buddhist national holiday celebrating the arrival of 1,250 monks to the doorstep of Lord Buddha. The monks were not beckoned or coordinated but arrived together.
