I am American without proper insurance, groan. Anyone have good tips on the medical check? I can not afford to spend $1,000 for a volunteer opportunity. I'm looking into options hoping it will work out! Let me know how you're getting yours done or any advice!

I WOULD HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM IF I WERE STATE SIDE.
TRY A LOCAL CLINIC OR A UNIVERSITY CAMPUS THAT HAS A CLINIC.
THERE IS USUALLY A JEWISH COMMUNITY CLINIC IN OR AROUND A BIG CITY AND YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE JEWISH. SEARCH THE INTERNET

You can get a background check from the FBI (If you live in the US) for $18, that's where I got mine, the only setback is that it can take up to 12 weeks if you do not request to have it expedited. Here's the link:

Thanks for the info, however I'm really only concerned about the medical check, not the background check. The more I'm looking into it, the more I find I cannot afford to do it. Best of luck to everyone else. Someday America will catch up.... ;)

For the medical check you can go to one of those free clinics to get tested for HIV/AIDS, Hep B & C, and the Drug screening. Then like PHD said go to a campus clinic and see a doctor to do the physical exam it really shouldn't cost you more than $50. I am sure there is a cheap way to do it!

Is there not inexpensive health care at State Hospitals in the States??? Try....where there is a will there is a way. Don't let this amazing opportunity pass you by!

Which state do you live in? I've lived in AZ, CA and DC and all three of them have local clinics that provide the exams for little to no money at all.

You are giving up to easy. I know it can be time consuming and difficult to find
an inexpensive anwser to the medical check...but it's out there.
It took me six months in Pittsburgh to find a clinic I was comfortable going to.
Tell us your home town and those of us with free time can look on the net for you.....

Instead of having your doctor do the tests, which are very expensive, you can ask your doctor order the blood/drug tests from the city or county health department. They can do each one for less than 10 dollars each, and the HIV test is free. The drug test is a bit more expensive, at 50-200 dollars, depending on the test that is ordered. That leaves the just the cost of the doctor visit, which can still be a bit costly without health insurance. Hope that helped.

Has anyone had any questions raised by your doctor in reference to the Polio Booster over 18?

The doctor/RN didn't raise any questions over it, they said it was a bit unusual but also noted that if it is a problem in the country, then the additional booster is understandable.

I just went ahead and got it–of all the tests and junk done, it was on the cheaper side and I'd rather not have to worry about it upon arriving in the country.
