Tax Information for ExpatsSo you're living abroad and lapping it up. Good for you. Hopefully you're making a bit of cash to tuck away for a rainy day or the white picket fence in the future.

Whether you're making money or not, tax time comes once a year no matter what country you are living in. The good thing is that in most cases you won't have to pay any tax on the income you are earning while teaching abroad.

One of the bigger challenges in working overseas is figuring out your tax obligations. Just because you are out of the country for a while does not mean that the Canada Revenue Agency has forgotten about you. You can file your taxes online with H&R Block At Home directly or you can sign up for their tax services online and get some professional consultation on what needs to be done.

In many cases there are tax treaties in place with various countries so that you are hit with paying taxes in Canada and in whatever country you are teaching in. However, you have to know what your rights are under the treaty and you have to know the proper procedure for claiming them. That is why it is important to retain the services of a tax professional.

Tax Advice for Canadian Teachers Abroad

There are a couple things to consider, most of them are almost clearly delineated on the Canada Revenue Service website… some wordy stuff but it’s all there if you follow this link: www.cra-arc.gc.ca

The most important thing to note is that no matter where you are, you STILL HAVE TO FILE TAXES.  You may not owe anything but filing is still required.
