Teacher certification opens the doors to a vast number of teaching opportunities locally and worldwide.  Having a teaching certificate demonstrates an incredible integrity to your candidacy and puts you at the front of the line when employers/schools are considering you for a work opportunity.

There are a couple things you should consider here:

1. You don't have to have an Education degree to get teaching certification - each State/Province has different policies for allowing anyone (with a minimum of a bachelor's degree) to sit a test or apply for a temporary state teaching license
2. If you get an Education degree you still need to get teacher certification and this certification is State/Province specific.

One would think that just like a doctor or an engineer or even an accountant that once you have your degree and license, you would be able to practise anywhere in the country where you got the degree and certification... makes sense.

As a teacher, your teaching license is only good for the state where you get certified... some states and provinces recognize licenses from other states or provinces but in some cases you have to re-certify.

However, if you have teacher certification, you are definitely a stand out when it comes to teaching abroad.  Most ESL teachers overseas don't have teacher certification so those with it are short listed and definitely highly regarded and better paid. If you've found yourself with a teaching certificate but without a classroom consider teaching overseas where you can improve your skills as a teacher and where you can do what you love!
