CELTA

We get a lot of teachers asking us what CELTA is and why it's a requirement.  These questions usually come after a teacher does some research on TEFL/TESL/TESOL programs and keeps on finding more and more information that leads them to CELTA.  Why CELTA?  Why do some schools ONLY accept CELTA and why would a Certificate for English Language Teaching for Adults mean so much even if I don't want to teach adults...

All CELTA courses consists of a minimum of 120 contact hours including:

  • Lectures and workshops
    • A highly practical look at the teaching methods, techniques and materials used to teach adult learners of English as well as a thorough review of the English language
  • Teaching practice (6 assessed hours)
    • A valuable opportunity to practise the skills you will learn on the CELTA course with real students
  • Supervised lesson planning
    • Your experienced CELTA tutors will guide you in designing your own lesson plans and introduce you to a range of teaching resources and materials
  • Feedback and counselling
    • Detailed personalised feedback from your tutor for all your lessons, as well as regular progress reports and individual counselling.  You will also have the opportunity to discuss your lesson with the other participants in the CELTA course.
  • Observation of lessons taught by experienced teachers and other CELTA course participants
    • A great opportunity to watch live classes in action and to network with other teachers and share strategies and methodologies

In addition to the scheduled timetable, the course also requires a minimum additional 80 hours of related reading, research and preparation of lessons and assignments.

Each CELTA course, no matter where in the world, HAS TO maintain specific course requirements and training standards to ensure they maintain their accreditation.  It is a SERIOUS TEFL course but with it, comes a serious price tag.  It's not cheap but it is widely recognized as one of the best possible courses for teachers of English as a second language.
