Getting Expat Medical Insurance

If you're planning on teaching English overseas or just travelling, regardless if you have an individual or a family health insurance plan, emergency medical insurance is a smart thing to get.  In our experience, and in dealing with our recommended advisors, we would strongly urge you to consider purchasing a private policy for the entire duration of your time abroad.  In most cases, as an example, a 12 month policy will cost you only about ~$1 a day!

Even if medical insurance is covered by your contract, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

  1. it does not start immediately
  2. it is only local coverage
    • EXAMPLE: As an American or Australian, if you travel to Canada, YOUR MEDICAL INSURANCE DOES NOT cover you while you travel IN CANADA.  You need to get travel insurance.  As a teacher WORKING in another country, you cannot just get travel insurance, you have to get EXPAT insurance.  You may qualify for TRAVEL INSURANCE from the country you are teaching in BUT  the policy will be written entirely in the local language... be careful
  3. coverage may not be complete
  4. what if you need to come home
  5. what if you're ill and you need a family member to come to the country you're in

Do not rely on your current health plan whether government or private to cover the costs if you get sick or injured while you are abroad. At best, your health plan will cover only a portion of the bill.

Tragic Loss - Young American Teacher in South Korea

Why Get Insurance Before You Go - Top 5 Reasons

First, it should be noted that Footprints is NOT an insurance provider.  The reason we bring insurance to your attention is because with literally thousands of teachers abroad at any one time, stuff happens.  We hear horror stories and we want to provide our teachers with the most information, the best opportunity and simply, we want to make sure you are going to be OK.  Insurance can be confusing.  Do I need it?  How long should I get it?  Why should I get it?

I recently asked Carey Alden, one of the expat medical insurance experts, why teachers need to sign up for minimum durations and what the policies cover.  Here are his answers AND, he provided the top 5 Benefits of getting expat medical insurance:

Why Do Teachers Need Emergency Medical Insurance?

If your contract already includes medical insurance, that coverage often does not start until you register and get your "residency" status in the country you are teaching. In most countries this takes 1-2 months after you arrive.

It is important to have some sort of medical coverage or travel insurance while your residency is being processed.
