Vanessa Lurie – Pedaling for Peace

E-mail

I have decided to join my friend Jamie as a part-time peace peddler.  I am about to embark on a 3.5 month bike ride across Southern Africa with a non-profit group called Peace Peddlers.  Peace Pedalers rides special tandem bikes around the world through 76 countries. They ride on the front seats and leave the rear seats open to bring new friends they meet along the way out riding with them.  All this to create more peace and understanding between nations through cultural exchange & education worldwide.   One of their main goals is to ride with someone from every country on planet earth and share the cultures with the world via the internet and documentary films.

Things have been going so well. I am getting really excited about going.  I decided to take things one step further and got in touch with a guy from Cape Town who runs the Bicycle empowerment Network (BEN).  He was so excited to work with us and we decided to work on a project together. So the PEDAL PROUD CAMPAIGN WAS BORN!!!  He sent me the names of 100 kids who desperately need bikes to get to school, work or to help their families with the chores. We were able to find 100 bikes for 40$ each.

I am having a fundraiser on Saturday night in Seoul to raise the money. What was supposed to be a party for friends is turning out to be huge. Both newspapers have contacted me to do a story and I have already been the feature story of a foreigner magazine called kscene. Check it out www.kscene.com (click on the k and then select feature story). Also have a look on Peace pedalers site for what’s happening. www.peacepedalers.com

Jamie and I will visit the schools and personally present the kids with the bikes on Valentine's Day. I am so focused on making it happen that I can't seem to get anything else done!!! LOL - This is definitely my passion...I just need to find a way to make a living doing it!

Peace Pedalers is a "Worldwide Invitation to Ride". That means YOU are invited! So if any of you want to take some time off and come and join me in beautiful South Africa, I will be there until the end of April.
