How much for?
One of our teachers in Georgia who is located in the capital Tbilisi created an overview of the costs of things.

How much for a meal?
- To eat a a Georgian restaurant aka "Georgian Kitchen" would be around 10 GEL without drinks.
- To eat an upper class Georgian restaurant 20+GEL
- To eat non-Georgian food cost significantly more usually 15-40 GEL without drinks and the cost of drinks at these places are twice as much than at the Georgian Kitchens.
- Cost of a standard McDonald's meal 16 GEL
- Cost of beer 2 GEL for beers on tap
- Cost of wine at a restaurant 4.50 GEL per glass or 20+ GEL for a bottle
- Cost of bottled local beer 4 GEL
- Cost of bottled imported beer 7 GEL
- Cost of small bottle of vodka at restaurant 8-15 GEL
- Family of four will spent about 100 Lari per week on groceries, but they generally only eat one or two meals a day. They don't have breakfast at all.
- Veg is very cheap, but the selection is limited. Tomatoes, cucumber, onion, beetroot, potatoes, carrot, cabbage, cauliflower, red and green peppers. Other veg can be found at the bazaars however it is more expensive.
- Fruit is more expensive than veg a banana will cost you 1 GEL as will a decent sized orange or apple. Fruit is seasonal in Georgia so there is a lot of fruit available cheaply for semester one, but not semester two.
- Meat is about 10 GEL per kg
- An over night train to Batumi costs 60 GEL (shared cabin of 4)
- An over night train to Zugdidi costs 22 GEL (shared cabin of 4)
- You can get anywhere in Georgia cheaply by mini bus between 2 - 10 GEL depending on where you are going. They are very uncomfortable, but worth it for the cheapness. They are also the quickest way to get anywhere in Georgia.
- You should not pay more than 5 GEL for anywhere in Tbilisi, but you have to barter. They will ALWAYS ask for more from a non-Georgian. Taxi's are plentiful if they do not come down in price simply hail another one.
- 0.50 GEL for a bus
- 0.50 GEL for the metro (underground)
- 0.30 - 0.50 GEL for a city service mini bus.
How much to rent a car in Georgia?
- this can be expensive by Georgian standards. Renting an economy class Jeep for a day costs around 50USD.
- The CIA suggests that the average person makes around $4400USD per year. At roughly $300 per month that would put teachers at $3600 per year and you have very little food or accommodation costs so you would be doing very well.
- Standard Georgian salary is about 300 GEL a month. Teachers get from 200 - 330 GEL a month. It depends on the schools, teachers at my school only get 125 GEL a month.
- 150 GEL a month in the village area's
- 250 GEL a month for a furnished single room apartment
- 450 GEL a month for a furnished two bedroom apartment
- 2 GEL a month for garbage collection
- 15 GEL a month for Georgian TV
- 30 GEL a month for internet
- 50 GEL a month for electricity
- 20-30 GEL a month for gas
- 3 GEL per person per month for water
- 5+ GEL for a decent coffee
- 3 GEL for a short sludgy Turkish style coffee
For some of your electronics, it is cheaper to buy a voltage converter (not an adaptor) that you can use for all of your appliances. They are easily found online and you can see which appliances they work with. You can buy an adapter for 2-3GEL in Georgia, they are very cheap, work well and are found everywhere.
