People have often said that teachers aren't in it for the money. If you're thinking about teaching in China, it's probably not about the money. That being said, you want to make sure you are getting market rates for your skills and experience and you really don't want to be working for free.
Salaries to teach English in China range from 4,000 – 20,000 RMB/month - some are even lower than 4,000 - some Chinese teachers are paid half that.
5 Reasons for Higher Salaries:
- a huge number of contracted teaching hours
- housing is not included
- requires an incredible amount of experience and credentials
- you are going to be shared among many different schools or clients
- the school may not intend to keep their contractual obligations
There are other reasons why a school may offer a high starting salary. Footprints does their best to only work with schools that will take care of their teachers. We do our best to make sure you will always be treated fairly so you can have the reassurance that you are going to a quality school so you can settled in an appreciate the experience rather than always having to look over your shoulder.
Standard salaries in public schools in China range around 4,000 to 8,000 RMB/month. To many, that will sound like a pretty low salary BUT please note that with these opportunities the teaching hours will be FAR lower than if you were working in a private language school were your contract will be anywhere from 24 teaching hours a week to 40+ teaching hours per week.
In some cases there are teaching opportunities in China that pay 10-20,000 RMB but these a special circumstance where you will be required to have loads of experience and qualifications and often these will be in one of the larger cities and housing is often not provided. This may also mean 40+ teaching hours per week.
Your starting salary will depend on a number of factors, mainly your experience as a teacher and the location of the school.
- with a degree and no experience expect 4500-5500 RMB.
- with a degree and experience expect 5000-7000 RMB.
- with an Education degree you can expect 6000-8000 RMB.
Even without an Education degree or significant experience, there are some teaching jobs in China that pay 8,000+ RMB salaries in larger centers like Beijing or Shanghai but often these opportunities will NOT include housing, which can be very expensive in Beijing, Shanghai or some of the larger metropolitan centers and often times these teaching opportunities will require you to work 30 or more teaching hours a week.

“Well all I can say is it is like nothing you could ever imagine. I am half way through my year and I could never have imagined all that I would learn and experience. Teaching is great, the kids are sweet (most of the time). Korea has lots to see and do. If you like shopping, climbing or eating this is the place for you! Having gotten on the plane and spent half a year here so far I feel like I can do anything. So what are you waiting for? Get on the plane already!”
