So how did I end up at Footprints? In a roundabout way I guess you could say it started when I was a kid reading to my brother every night, teaching him how to read.

I grew up in Richmond, B.C. Throughout high school I was a lifeguard and swim instructor, where I fell in love with teaching. Up until grade 12 I wanted to be a doctor: for one I could be called Doctor Proctor; and two, doctors make a lot of money and I like money. That all changed when I took English Literature in my senior year and found I could get A’s and B’s on my report card and I didn’t have to memorize a thing! Oh,... and I also love English Literature!

This led to the decision to major in English at the beautiful University of British Columbia. Upon graduation I had fleeting thoughts of teaching abroad but decided to enter into the service industry as a bartender. For the next two and a half years I had a lot of fun and managed to go to Mexico, Las Vegas and eventually Australia. I had the travel bug and Vancouver wasn’t the adventure I was looking for so after a few months I decided to go to Korea to teach English, departure date February 7th, 2002.

When I arrived in Sokcho, a beautiful coastal town located in the Northeast corner of South Korea, I was greeted by an extremely happy Korean man and a guy from London. I have to admit for the first month I wanted to leave, I hadn’t really researched anything about Korea and Vancouver was looking pretty good, but I persevered and soon wouldn’t have gone home if you paid me. I was learning the language, getting accustomed to my surroundings, and buying my World Cup tickets, but best of all was the kids, they were learning English and I was the one teaching them.

Being in a smaller town turned out to be the best decision I could have made, as I was introduced to the Korean culture on a daily basis and the community familiarity caused me to enjoyed my stay immensely. Being one of the few 6 foot white guys in a small Korean town people soon recognize you and treat you like a rock star. By the time I left Sokcho I had hook ups all over the town as the parents of my students were happy to show their appreciation by treating me like royalty, and trust me saying no to a Korean parent is not an option. My contract was up after a year and I decided to stay another six months before heading back to Vancouver and figure out what to do with the rest of my life.

When I got back I found myself bartending again while I decided whether to go back to school or find a career job, I ended up doing something in the middle, I became a manager at the restaurant. I learned a tremendous amount about how a business is run, was part of an opening of a new restaurant and was on the path to running my own franchise. Eventually I figured out that my life was being run by the restaurant and I didn’t see myself continuing down that path. So I cut my losses and left for greener pastures in the form of more bartending.
While doing so I started to look for something I could really sink my teeth into and began putting my name out there and applying for any job I could see myself being interested in, and then Footprints contacted me. Over the next two months I had a couple of interviews and near the end of August I got the call, they wanted to hire me. After a week of intense training I was ready to send teachers over to Korea to do what I had done, my life had come full circle.
