Hi Jeff,
The students in my night school class are all the children of the University staff. I've been teaching them for the past six weeks and have had a great time. We are together from 6:30 - 9:30, Monday through Friday.
The three hours goes by quickly for the students but it gives me a good workout every night. Their ages range from nine to twenty three so it takes some doing on my part to keep them all motivated.
On many nights, at least one of the students will start to cry when it is time to go home because they want to keep learning English.
Many of my regular University students found jobs over the summer teaching young children in one of a number private English language schools here in Jiaozuo. Throughout the summer, I've visited several of these schools (along with my student) and have been treated like an honoured guest.
It is the first time that many of the children have seen a "foreigner" face to face. Many are thrilled, some are scared; most are curious.
I've been asked several times this summer if I came to China by stepping through the television!
The English Department here at the University are a great group. The men and women all treat me as a true "foreign expert" and make me feel most welcome.
Once again, I will be teaching spoken English to the first year students. My second year students will continue their learning with me this term. I will also teach grade three writing and a special "graduate" writing class for the Seniors (grade four).
I can't tell you how many times I've had my photograph taken - both with the students and the staff. Their smiles tell me that they're glad I'm here.
