Hockey in Korea - Gecko Glaciers

Expat Hockey Team in Seoul ice-hockey-south-korea

The Geckos Glaciers are an expatriate hockey team in Seoul made up of mostly English teachers but there are a number of other local folk who are bar owners, restaunteurs, artists and so forth. The team was originally sponsored by a popular expat bar in Itaewon called Geckos. Which meant a better service at the bar and cheap drinks on ocassion and a couple platters.

I am not sure whether this is still a tradition (the bar sponsorship) but I know the team and I continue to get the email updates on the various international tournaments they go into and the famous Imjin Cup.
The Glaciers welcome players of all skill levels and all nationalities.

The Glaciers have been in existence since 1999 and was the brain child of six desperate, hockey starved ESL teachers – one of which was our own Jeff Strachan. They currently play at the Anyang Sports Complex on Sunday nights - might be best to visit in-person as English can be a struggle on the phone).

They had a website but it's no longer active... hard to maintain with the transient nature of expat teachers in Korea. If you're into hockey and you're in Seoul - head to Anyang to the ice rink on Sunday evening.

Hockey in Korea saw tremendous growth in 2004 with over 10 expat teams getting together and playing in what was the first expat league. Since participation has waned some but there are alway guys willing to get their gear sent over if only someone is willing to organize it.

Your best bet if you are looking to play some hockey in Korea is to contact the local ice rink.
