Located high up on the Erusheli mountain side in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia sits the famous Cave City of Vardzia. Originally built in 1185 by the people under Queen Tamar's rule, it's purpose was to offer protection from the invading Mongols. Today, it is maintained by a small group of monks who reside in one of the many 'apartments' that survived the numerous raids and even an earthquake.
