Kakheti is the Birthplace of Wine

Yes, I know what you're thinking... no way! Surely Italy or Greece, Rome, France or Portugal were the creators of wine - these are the countries that have historically been so famous for wine.  Wine actually didn't appear in these European countries until about 4500 BC, while it originated in Georgia and Iran in 6000 BC in a little region named Kakheti located in Eastern Georgia.

Georgia is the cradle of wine making.  Over 7000 years ago man first discovered the art of wine making in Georgia and today there are over 500 varieties of wine grapes and loads of wonderful wines to tempt any wine drinkers palate. Some grape varietals grown in the region are protected by European law.

Kakhetians have long been famous for their production of grapes and enjoyed grape juice, but of course one can't always have grapes on hand to make juice and henceforth came the discovery that storing grape juice in clay pots made a delicious intoxicating new drink.

This is one of the most visited regions in Georgia, offering a relaxed pace set in lush green rolling hills and vineyards stretching far into the distance.  Telavi is a beautiful romantic town, perhaps one of the oldest in the region.  Other major point of interest in the region are the Shuamta Monastery, the Alaverdi Monastery and much more. The Vashlovani National Park is home to native leopards and offers stunning opportunities for camping and hiking.
