Punta Arenas (meaning Sandy Point in Spanish) is a seaside town/city (approximately 150,000 people) commonly acting as the jump off point for treks to Patagonia and Torres del Paine. It is known as the southern most city on earth and overlooks the Straits of Magellan.
Teachers heading to Punta Arenas should be aware the temperatures range between lows of -1C in July (winter) to highs of around 14C in January (summer). The people are very hospitable.
The famous empanadas are a culinary delight here with a focus on meat as the filling and the famous Pisco Sour is a mainstay as are local wines.
Trekkers interested in a stable cooler climate and access to some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, Punta Arenas is a great spot to bring your boots and camping gear.
Points of Interest in Punta Arenas:
- Fort Bulnes - a historical site which was a very early Spanish settlement.
- Pinguineros - Parque Nacional Torres Del Paine - Penguin Colony - located on Isla Magdalena there is a penguin Rookery that is absolutely fantastic. Tours run from Punta Arenas when the seas are safe enough for travel.
- Cerro La Cruz - offering spectacular views of the city and Straits of Magellan.
- Museo Salesiano de Mayonino Borgatello - offers valuable information on the history of the area.
- There is a casino (small).
- There are a couple of movie theaters, pubs and restaurants.
